Tax Assistance

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

VITA is an IRS (Internal Revenue Service) sponosored program flowing out of the Tax Reform Act of 1969. Through VITA, free tax help is provided to qualifying individuals and families.

The primary qualification is financial need. To qualify for the services being offered through Glenn Communities Working Together (GCWT), the individual or family must not have earned income in excess of $20,000. In addition they must be able to file using the 1040-EZ or 1040-A.

At a site to be announced, tax payers who have made an appointment will bring the necessary tax information and provide the interviewer with the information needed to complete either the 1040-EZ or 1040-A. No walk-ins will be accepted other than to set up an appointment for a future date.

Tax appointments can be scheduled from the last week of January, 2006, thru April, 15, 2006. The returns prepared will be for the 2005 income year.

Glenn Communities' primary objective in offering this service is to maximize the amount of money available to individuals or families. Filing of the 1040-EZ or 1040-A will enable the tax payer to receive a refund of earnings which were withheld in excess of any tax liability. Those who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) will receive a refund of both unused withholding and the amount of the EITC for which they have qualified.

Since this service will be provided free of charge, the individual or family will not need to use any of their refund for tax preparation or to pay any fees for a quick refund. Because it is expected GCWT will have the capability of E-filing, those who use the service can expect to receive their refund within two weeks of the date on which they come in for their interview.
